Priorities: 2010-11 Projects and Activities

Despite significant changes in 2010-11, BCCAT staff members successfully accomplished most of the planned projects for the year, with considerable support from system partners and consultants. The work plan was designed specifically to ensure the smooth transition of responsibilities.

BCCAT projects and activities are identified by their accordance with key priorities arising from the Council's mandate. These priorities are outlined below, along with some examples of related projects and activities from 2010-11.

  1. Collaborating with BC post-secondary partners

BCCAT takes a collaborative approach in working with BC post-secondary partners. This involves a wide range of activities, including consulting, advising, mediating, and addressing issues and enquiries as they arise. This also entails working with numerous committees and organizations to address developments impacting the system.
  2. Understanding student mobility and success

Much of BCCAT research is designed to better inform institutional planning, procedures, and policies. In recent years, we have broadened our research agenda to focus on student and credit mobility, in light of the multi-directional movement of students among BC post-secondary institutions.
  3. Facilitating admissions, transfer, and articulation

This is a major component of the work of BCCAT: providing support, resources, services, and a coordinating function as appropriate. Here are two examples from 2010-11:
    1.  BCCAT produced two new resources to support admissions, transfer, and articulation in the BC system. The first, the New Members’ Resource Book, outlines the norms of the BC Transfer System for institutions newly admitted to the system. The second, An Overview of Admissions Practices, provides a review of a wide range of admissions practices at BC post-secondary institutions.
    2. Through the efforts of a sub-committee of the Transfer and Articulation Committee (TAC), BCCAT made major revisions to the Principles & Guidelines for Transfer to reinforce the student-centred focus of the BC Transfer System.
  4. Supporting students’ post-secondary planning

BCCAT provides online resources and information to equip students to plan their education pathways. This year, we updated the three BCCAT websites (BCCAT.ca, BCTransferGuide.ca, and EducationPlanner.ca) to offer more streamlined and accessible content in a new visual format. Much of our marketing and communications activities focus on increasing awareness and encouraging usage of these planning tools.
  5. Advancing inter-provincial mobility

BCCAT continues to look for opportunities to facilitate and promote pan-Canadian student mobility and transfer. This includes providing advice and support to Canadian provinces that wish to develop and implement their own transfer systems and to encourage support for such activities at the Ministerial level. In recent years, this has meant working with two groups in particular: the Pan-Canadian Consortium on Admissions and Transfer (PCCAT), and the Western Canadian Consortium on Admissions and Transfer (WestCAT).

These are just a few examples of the ways in which BCCAT works to fulfill the Council's mandate. The following review features highlights of these and other key projects and activities carried out this year.
